What Does Breaking Spades Mean?

2 min read

Breaking spades means a spade has been played for the first time in a hand, usually to trump a trick in another suit. Until then, nobody may lead a spade unless their hand holds nothing but spades. At Spades Night, jokers and the 2♦ count as spades for this rule.

Breaking spades is the moment the first spade is played in a hand. Before that, spades can't be led. After that, they can. It's the rule that keeps a player with a fistful of trump from simply running them from the first trick. It's one of the core spades rules.

How it works

  • You may not lead a spade until spades are broken.
  • Spades are broken the first time anyone plays a spade, typically when they're void in the suit led and choose to trump.
  • Exception: if every card in your hand is a spade, you may lead one, and that breaks spades too.
  • Following a spade lead is never the problem: the rule is only about leading.

At Spades Night, the Big Joker, Little Joker and 2♦ count as spades for this rule. You can't lead them early, and playing one on another suit breaks spades.

Example

Trick 1: the player left of the dealer leads K♥. Everyone follows with hearts. Spades aren't broken.

Trick 4: diamonds are led. You're out of diamonds, so you play the 5♠ and win. Spades are now broken.

Trick 5: you won trick 4, so you lead. You may now lead the A♠ or any spade you like.

Another case: your partner has only the 2♦, the Little Joker and three spades left after trick 8. Even if spades haven't been broken, they may lead one, because they have nothing else.

How Spades Night handles it

  • Break spades is on by default.
  • The game won't let you lead a spade (or a joker, or the 2♦) before it's allowed. Those cards are simply not playable on the lead.
  • The first lead of every hand goes to the player left of the dealer, and it has to be a non-spade unless their whole hand is trump.
  • You can switch the rule off at a private table, which lets anyone lead spades from the first trick.

Variations at other tables

Some tables require the first lead to be the 2♣ (a hearts habit). Some let you lead spades at any time.

  • Trump: playing a spade on another suit, the usual way spades get broken.
  • Void: being out of a suit, which is when you're allowed to cut.
  • Big Joker and Little Joker: trump cards that follow the same rule.
  • Deuces: the 2♦, which counts as a spade in House Rules.

Questions people ask

Can you lead spades on the first trick?

No. The first lead must be a non-spade. At Spades Night the player left of the dealer leads it. The only exception is a hand made up entirely of spades.

What does breaking spades mean?

It means a spade has been played in the hand, usually on a trick where the player couldn't follow suit. After that, anyone may lead spades.

Can you lead a joker before spades are broken?

No. Jokers count as spades, so they can't be led until spades are broken, the same as the 2♦ in House Rules. Playing one on another suit does break spades.
